This bathroom in our West Duluth house was in the best condition of any bathroom we’ve renovated, but it was still dated, cramped, didn’t maximize its space, and had really low ceilings. Here are some pictures of what we started with:
We’ve seen a lot worse. The double sinks were nice. But it needed to be redone.
This was one of three of my initial concepts. I couldn’t get a clear design vision for this either, like the kitchen. I couldn’t decide between floor to ceiling beadboard painting a dark color, floor to ceiling wallpaper, or a combo of the two.
This is the design we ended up going with.
This is how the bathroom turned out:
We changed the beadboard color, sconces, and floor tile. But I absolutely love how it turned out. The sources will be listed at the bottom of the post.
I really wanted a dark bathroom with a lot of marble tile. I was worried about the room feeling too dark with the dark wallpaper and dark vanity, but it works perfectly.
This dark marble bathroom is a stark contrast from what it was before – cramped and in need of work. The Rifle Paper Co Hawthorne wallpaper contrasts perfectly with all of the marble tile.
I mentioned this in the kitchen post, but we had a month to renovate this bathroom before we moved in. The only other toilet and functioning water source in the house was the old toilet freestanding in the open, demoed basement. You got two flushes out of the toilet before the water was gone, and the only way to fill it up was with a bucket and a spigot somewhere in the basement…that I don’t know how to work. So we were motivated to finish it quickly.
We were on schedule to finish on time, and then our tile arrived like this:
The delivery guy said it was the most destroyed pallet he’s ever seen.
So we ended up having to use the basement toilet (not the kids – they stayed at my parents until it was safe and functioning for them). Reed fashioned a bucket to wash my hands and a space heater aimed at the toilet– what is love other than fashioning a warm toilet and sink for your wife in a demolished basement?
The original tile company couldn’t get new tile to us very quickly so we had to try to find the same tile from another company. We found marble tile for the floor that wasn’t the same but still very pretty on sale, for a third of the price of the original tile. We found the same wall tile and they could get it to Minneapolis quickly–we could pick it up in two days. So we had to make an extra drive but we ended up with only a week’s delay.
I spent many weeks (and lots of money….) trying to pick a color for the beadboard. I ended up going with the color of the trim that’s in the rest of the house :). It was worth the extra effort though to make sure we didn’t waste money on paint and time and effort painting the bathroom twice.
